So you’ve tried almost everything to generate high-quality leads, but nothing really seems to be working.
In this article, I will talk about some of the most common, most competitive and most expensive lead sources out there.
If you stay to the end, I’ll also reveal *exactly* how Noland’s Roofing reduced their cost-per-lead with 87% in 90 days using our system.
Generating high-quality, long-form leads for $18 each:
Top 5 Most Common & Expensive Roofing / Solar Lead Sources
Here are the top 5 most common lead sources today and why most solar & roofing contractors are not happy with the results.
As you may know, HomeAdvisor used to be called ServiceMagic up until October 2012. Back then they actually delivered high quality leads for reasonable prices.
However since then, the prices have gone up every year, and the lead quality has sunk like Titanic to the bottom of the sea.
The cost-per-lead is now days usually between $80-$150.
But the worst part about those leads is that they are duplicate. Meaning, you’re not the only roofing contractor receiving them.
Up to 5 other contractors receive them at the same time as you do, which is kind of crazy if you ask me...
One of our current residential roofing clients used to pay HomeAdvisor ~$2,500 per month. For that, he got close to 20 leads. Out of those 20 leads he ended up talking with 2 homeowners…
Sounds like a great deal to me! (not)
Another big problem with HomeAdvisor is that it’s a 3rd party service lead provider. Meaning that you can’t build your brand awareness locally simultaneously as you advertise for leads.
Which, if you ask me, is a huge problem…!
It’s only when you build your brand awareness over time that you get that momentum and snowball effect rolling in your favor.
I will talk more about how my agency and I solve this problem later on.
Google Ads obviously works pretty well, but just like HomeAdvisor, it’s not what it used to be 2 years ago.
Because of competition, pretty much every roofing and solar company out there are utilizing Google Ads and/or an organic SEO campaign.
The prices go up, and you get a lot more tire-kicker leads opting in for Free Estimates. Which makes sense, when homeowners google for a roofer or solar company in your are they are being presented with over 10 results on the Google search engine result page (SERP) and over 20 results on the maps. And that is excluding all of the ads which probably ads 3-5 additional results.
The homeowner will naturally optin for a couple of different companies to see who has the best price, service, terms, etc…
Another flaw that I find with Google ads is that you can’t really build your brand awareness with it neither, just like with HomeAdvisor.
Your business listing kind of disappears among the competition, you can’t show any images or logos (unless people click on the listing).
In conclusion, Google Ads is very competitive, expensive and lacks brand awareness building capabilities. I’m personally not a fan of Google ads at all.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
I’m a big believer in organic Google SEO, I’ve personally done Amazon affiliate marketing quite successfully since 2015. Building websites that generate hundreds of thousands of visitors per month and quite a lot of cash with it.
I’ve also sold SEO services successfully in the past, so believe me, it definitely works.
It has some major flaws to it, here’s why:
1.) One day you’re the winner - the next day you’re gone
You can never, ever, ever predict results with Google SEO. Google is the boss here, if you play outside their rules and Google decides to update their algorithm (which they do multiple times per year), all your effort will go down the drain.
You might even hire a “white-hat” SEO agency building the correct types of links etc. And even then you can’t guarantee long-lasting results.
Google and its algorithm is being smarter every second, having machine learning, artificial intelligence and big data in their arsenal. It’s just impossible to try and foresee or predict how to gain a competitive advantage and “trick” the system.
2.) It takes time
If you’ve never done any type of SEO in the past. Meaning, you’ve never optimized your website for any kind of keyword nor built any types of high quality & niche relevant links. Then getting on the first page of Google in less than 6 months is very unlikely. Rather 12 months would be reasonable, and even then as mentioned earlier, no results are guaranteed.
These are the exact reasons why I decided to stop selling SEO services, even though I still utilize it myself.
I did not feel comfortable charging a premium service fee not being able to guarantee results.
I’ve hired one of the best SEO agencies in the world for one of my personal Amazon affiliate projects charging more than $3,500 per month (which were one of their lowest fees). Even they can’t possibly guarantee results.
3.) The SEO competition is staggering in the roofing & solar industry
Pretty much every roofing and solar company out there have an SEO agency helping them. Meaning that even though you might hire the best SEO guys out there, you’re going up against fierce competition.
Now we’re not talking the typical 6-12 months to get results. If you have high competition, it will be guaranteed to take 12 months+, and the chances are quite high that you might never ever see any results.
Meaning, you might end up paying an SEO agency $2,500 per month (minimum) for 12 months getting zero ROI.
SEO is great as a compliment to your main predictable advertising system, you should not rely on SEO itself.
These are the exact reasons why I decided to move away from organic SEO as a service. I understood that Google is not making the SEO game easier, it’s getting harder every month, and the reason is obvious, they want to sell more ads.
I decided to leave the over-crowded SEO industry and start learning how to provide paid traffic for my clients instead, and It was not by doing Google Ads.
More about the solution later...
TV & Radio Commercials
Let’s face it, these old methods are a thing of the past. Unless you have a huge advertising budget and can put some money into it and “test it out,” I would not recommend it.
The main reason why I do not recommend TV & Radio commercials is due to the lack of tracking capabilities.
You have no idea what your ROI is and how much you pay per new lead etc.
Sure, it might be useful for overall branding and such, but still, there are a lot better options online today!
Offline Print (Billboards, Magazines, Direct Mail, etc...)
Same thing here with offline print, unless you have a huge budget and can allocate a smaller portion of it to test offline print, I don’t recommend it.
You can’t track anything here neither, you have no idea what the ROI is and how much pay for your marketing efforts.
I’m not saying that it’s terrible, but it should not be your main technique for generating high quality leads consistently.
If you want to generate high quality leads with predictability, you rather need a proven online system that can run like a workhorse day and night.
Why Facebook Advertising Is Superior In The Roofing & Solar Industry
“But Max, Facebook doesn’t work for the roofing industry, everyone is on Google!”
You’re right, and you’re wrong at the same time, let me explain…
Yes, every roofing and solar company is on Google as explained earlier, and that is *exactly* why you should stay out of it!
However, you’re wrong thinking that Facebook advertising doesn’t work for the roofing industry.
Matter of fact, it’s working exceptionally well!
1.) The competition is lower
Not a lot of roofing or solar companies are utilizing the power of Facebook as of right now.
There’s a false belief out there that Facebook doesn’t work as well as Google ads.
OR they think that Facebook is generating lower quality leads. This is completely absurd…
We’re generating high quality leads consistently, month after month for our clients for a fraction of the cost compared to HomeAdvisor, Google Ads etc...
High quality leads for $15-$20 is a typical day for our clients and us, here’s a screenshot from one of the result reports we sent one of our clients in December 2018.
This particular client used to spend tens of thousands of dollars per month on Google Ads, HomeAdvisor, TV & Radio commercial, magazines, etc…
Now they are getting better results for a FRACTION of the price using Facebook ads and our proven system.
2.) The learning curve is higher
Let’s face it, it’s harder to run a Facebook advertising campaign than Google Ads.
A lot of contractors think you can “boost one of your posts” and expect great results.
The truth is that building profitable Facebook campaigns are a lot more complicated and sophisticated than that. You need a proven process and a predictable system in place to get it to run profitably.
Because of this learning curve, most roofing and solar companies miss out on this opportunity.
There are easier options out there to get leads via third party lead providers such as HomeAdvisor.
BUT, the quality is a hundred times worse, and the prices are a lot higher ($130+ per lead)
If you want to learn how to run a successful roofing or solar campaign on Facebook, check out our free training case study.
3.) Facebook has over 214 million ACTIVE users in the USA.
Did you know that Facebook users spend an average of 79 minutes per day in its apps?
So chances are VERY high that the homeowners in your area looking for a new roofing or solar company would see your ads if you just knew how to show it to them.
Another great thing about Facebook advertising is your not shown among 20 of your competitors on the same page, like on Google.
When your ad is being shown, you’re the only roofing advertisement there, that makes a huge difference!
I just spent the past week putting together a FREE case study for roofing and solar contractors on how to generate high quality and inexpensive leads using Facebook advertising.
